Funny Bug in Thunderbird 3

Today while I was at work I had to request a particular day off through our online tool. When the request was approved I received an email from the system which wanted a return read receipt. I allowed it to send the return recipt and then Thunderbird showed a message stating that it was not a valid address and again I clicked ok. Once I clicked that I got a very funny message which seems to be a debugging step for the developers on Thunderbird 3. Look below for a screen shot.

Review: The Palm Pre

If you have ready anything on my site regarding the Palm Pre you will find that every review is good in nature. However I feel those reviews have more to do with the functionality of the phone and not the actual hardware. While this post will not go into details about the hardware specifications it will deal with hardware quality. So without wasting any time let’s get started.

I have had 2 Palm Pre’s on my Sprint account for the last 10 months. My fiance and I both have the phones and have been happy with them for the most part. However what really makes me angry is the quality of the phone. Now you see I can understand having to replace a defective phone from time to time but this is getting ridiculous. I have replaced my phone 3 or 4 times and my fiances phone is being replaced for a 3rd time now. Surely 2 phones should not have to be replaced 7-8 times over the course of a year. Shouldn’t phones that are “this expensive” actually be quality devices? I have no qualms with the way the phone operates. I rather like the WebOS operating system but without a phone that will function the OS is rendered useless as well.

I have contacted Sprint to see about getting different phones but I feel they are going to tell me that I am out of luck. This is the point where I will just end the contract with Sprint and find service elsewhere. I will update this post once I hear back from Sprint with their response.

Do you have a Pre? How many times have you had to have yours repaired/replaced? Please leave a comment and let me know.

A Stroll Down Hollywood Memory Lane

Over the last year my step son Dylan has been asking me to get him movies from Netflix. He loves watching movies and has watched all of the “new-release” movies for the last few years. He was not sure what movie he wanted but knew that he wanted a movie that he had not seen before. My fiance Claire and I picked out a few movies from our child hoods. My pick was my child hood favorite “Howard the Duck”. Now when he got the movie in the mail and we let him watch it I was amazed at what was in this movie. I never recalled him smoking cigars, drinking beer or even the naked duck in the tub in the beginning of the movie. While all of this content is harmless because you see it on TV everyday it made me think.. There was nothing wrong with a kid watching this movie when I was growing up but today it seems like it would not be suitable for most kids.

Last week my fiance picked out “Stand by Me” which is a classic that we both watched as kids. It was nice seeing Kiefer Sutherland in something other than “24″. I never knew he was in this movie however until after I had been watching the show 24 for several years now. He was so young in this movie and I was a bit thrown after watching this movie. I did not remember the kids smoking cigarettes, swearing like they did. I was also surprised that they carried a gun. You have to keep in mind the kids in this movie are 12 years old and the things they do are not suitable for children to do these days. Now the movie was made in 1986 and was set in the 50′s/60′s i believe. He watched it because it was a classic movie however we told him that kids never really did those things and that it was just a story.

Are there movies from your child hood that you remember but don’t recall just how “bad” it was?

ZF: Creating RESTful Applications

Over the last few days I have been trying to use the Zend_Rest_Controller along with the Zend_Rest_Route to make a RESTful application for an API that I am working on. It is very easy to get things setup with these components and I will cover that now. You might be asking yourself why do I have to use both components, why is it not rolled into one nice component. The answer is really basic and if you look at the source code for the Zend_Rest_Controller you will see that it is solely an abstract class that defines the methods required for use with the Zend_Rest_Route. When your controller extends from the Zend_Rest_Controller it just forces you to implement the indexAction(), getAction(), postAction(), putAction() and deleteAction() methods. Technically you do not have to extend from Zend_Rest_Controller so long as you implement these methods in all of your RESTful controllers. It is good design to extend the class though as it will throw exceptions for developers who forget to add one of these methods. Without the methods the Zend_Rest_Route cannot route the request to the matching RESTful methods.

In order to get started you have to add a method to your Bootstrap file. This method can be named anything you like however it has to start with _init.
